AMD Radeon HD 7970 reviews

Published by

The all new AMD Radeon HD 7970 made her appearance today in many hardware related websites. Performance wise R7970 is going to race against nVIDIA’s GeForce GTX580. Let’s see what they have said about this one Christmas present from AMD.

With all that has happened to AMD recently we are glad to see a product of this caliber, we hope to see good volume availability real fast though with more competitive prices as the 549 USD seems a little too steep though. When that happens, we can very much so recommend the product, the Radeon HD 7970 is a very pleasing product and left us a very solid impression. – Guru3D.com

So at the end of the day AMD has once again retaken the performance crown for single-GPU cards, bringing them back to a position they last held nearly 2 years ago with the 5870. To that AMD deserves kudos, and if you’re in the market for a $500+ video card the 7970 is clearly the card to get – it’s a bit more expensive than the GTX 580, but it’s reasonably faster and cooler all at once. However if you’ve been waiting for 28nm GPUs to bring about another rapid decrease in video card prices as we saw with the 5870, you’re going to be waiting a bit longer. – AnandTech.com

AMD’s new Radeon HD 7970 successfully introduces the company’s new Graphics Core Next GPU architecture to the market. The move away from the VLIW shaders promises increased flexibility and higher performance, while still retaining compatibility with driver optimizations done for the VLIW architecture. In our testing we see AMD’s new flagship cruise past NVIDIA’s GeForce GTX 580 with a healthy 15% performance margin averaged over all our benchmarks – at 2560×1600, making it the fastest single GPU graphics card in the world. 2560×1600, at least 1920×1200, should be your gaming resolution, otherwise the card won’t be able to play out its full potential. With EyeFinity support for several monitors, the card could also power a triple monitor high-end gaming rig. – TechPowerUp.com

Time will tell if AMD’s commitment to GPU-based compute will pay off. In the short-term, though, its Radeon HD 7970 is a desirable graphics card for gamers looking for great single-GPU performance. It’ll take Nvidia’s answer to the Radeon HD 7000 series, based on its next-generation Kepler architecture and expected in the first half of 2012, to contend with this powerhouse. Before you’re able to buy it in January, however, we’ll have a more in-depth follow-up for your decision-making pleasure. – TomsHardware.com

AMD has taken the performance crown back, and currently has the fastest single-GPU video card for PC gaming. We experienced dramatic improvements over the Radeon HD 6970, and consistent improvements over an overclocked GeForce GTX 580. In our experiences, it was the newest DX11 games that pushed Tessellation which received the most improvement. If future games use more Tessellation, we may see the Radeon HD 7970 separate itself in a greater degree from the Radeon HD 6970 and GeForce GTX 580.Considering the performance advantages we experienced, the power efficiencies experienced, and the fact that we can finally play games with a single-GPU video card at 5760×1200 Eyefinity, we feel this video card deserves this award. – HardOCP.com

For now, AMD has certainly thrown down the gauntlet. The HD 7970 3GB is a huge improvement over the HD 6970 2GB and GTX 580 1.5GB, and it matches this performance with quiet operation and genuinely useful innovations such as the new ZeroCore technology. Considering its high price and the uncertain nature of the GPU market, though, this is a card for performance junkies with plenty of cash. – Bit-Tech.com

At the end of the day the Radeon HD 7970 is a great looking graphics card that puts AMD back on top of NVIDIA when it comes to single GPU performance. Will it be enough to hold off NVIDIA’s next generation graphcics cards? We don’t know the answer to that question since they aren’t out yet.  We talked to NVIDIA today and they said they plan on releasing their next generation processor in the first half of 2012 and our sources off the record said it would be at the end of that time frame. That means AMD might have the lead for the next six month! Kuduos to AMD for being on top!  - Legit-Reviews.com

Every increment on the way, we went the extra mile to ensure that there was actually scaling (and not bs throttling). With clocks like these on stock voltages and cooling, you’ll wonder how much higher it can go when software or hardware voltage modifications together with better cooling are applied to this card. Looks like the 28nm process die shrink did pay off.. – VR-Zone.com

Radeon HD 7970 represents a successful major graphics overhaul. Fast and furious, it’s a harbinger of things to come. – Hexus.net
